As part of its funding agreement with Arts Council England (ACE), Kent Music is required to monitor the effectiveness of its programmes and feedback its findings to ACE. To enable us to do this, since 2012, we have commissioned an external data company to work with us and help us undertake an online annual research study in Kent state schools.
The purpose of this survey is to collect information about musical activities currently taking place at your school and the completion of this survey means that schools become eligible to receive ring-fenced music funding from Kent Music. Non completion of this survey will result in funding not being available or being withheld (see terms and conditions below).
As well as the collated data being sent to the Arts Council it is also used by Kent Music and our partners to inform planning for music education activities in Kent and to enhance our services, in line with data protection regulations. Contact details are not used for marketing purposes.
The annual Kent Music Schools Survey for academic year 2023-24 is now closed
The survey was open for 4 weeks between Monday 3rd June 2024 â Friday 28th June 2024.
It is a schoolâs responsibility to ensure that Kent Music have an up to date contact at the school. If you have any questions about your school survey, or wish to update the contact details for the school please contact schools@kent-music.com.

Changes to the 2023-24 Survey
Arts Council England have made some additional data requests for the 23/24 academic year. This year we will be requesting, where known, pupil ethnicity data for those engaged in ensembles and tuition in your school. In order to make this as smooth as possible for the completer we have created an excel sheet proforma that must be uploaded to your survey once completed.

Why must I complete the survey?
A requirement of our funding from the Arts Council/DfE is that we report back on what musical activity is happening in schools across the county and how the previous year’s funding has been used to support this. To fulfil our obligations, and as a pre-requisite for schools to receive the funding, we ask that this survey is completed so we can collect the required data for reporting back on our funding. We also use the data to develop our offer and support schools better. Unfortunately, non-completion of this survey in conjunction with an application will result in the school not being eligible for funded opportunities.
What are the dates for the survey?
The survey is open for a 4 week period in term 6 of each academic year. Specific dates will be updated each year.
Where do I go to access the survey?
The survey will be sent to your school via email on the day the survey opens. Each school has a unique ID to access their survey. It is essential that schools inform Kent Music of any change in staff that may affect them receiving their survey.
I cannot find the survey in our inbox, what do I do?
Please check your junk mail boxes if you cannot find the survey in your inbox. It is also worth checking with the person who monitors the generic school email address to check if they have received it. If no one at the school has managed to locate the survey, please contactschools@kent-music.com check all possible routes before getting in touch!
Who should complete the survey?
As the survey will ask questions directly related to the music provision in school, we suggest the music lead or member of this department is best placed to respond to the survey. However, in some cases a headteacher or bursar will also have the relevant information.
What will the survey ask me?
The survey will ask you questions about music making in your school during the last academic year. This includes curriculum provision, tuition that has taken place, ensembles that run in your school and other areas of music provision.
Can I have a paper copy?
You can print a copy of our preview document to help you collate your data, which can be found on our website. All survey submissions must be made via the link provided in the email. You can save or print a version before you submit for your records
How can I keep a record of our submission?
When you come to the end of the survey there will be an option to âPRINT BEFORE SUBMITTINGâ please click on this button to print a copy of your answers
Can you tell me what I wrote in our survey last year?
We will have a master copy of all data collected in the survey which we use for our Arts Council England reporting and for our own planning. We are not able to provide schools with all their survey answers and suggest anyone wishing to keep a copy of their survey selects the option to âPRINT BEFORE SUBMITTINGâ before you submit the survey.
Do I have to complete the survey on one go?
No, you will have the opportunity to save and return to the survey at different points. You will need your unique ID to log into your survey response after you have saved it. You are only able to submit the survey once, please ensure all questions are complete before submitting.
What is my schools unique ID for the survey?
The ID is included in your email with the survey link. This may change from one year to the next so please ensure you are using the most recent ID sent to you.
I have submitted my survey but some of the data was wrong/I did not fully complete it. What do I do?

I need help answering some of the questions in the survey, who can I contact?
You can contact your Area Manager who can advise you on how you complete the survey, or you can get in touch with the Schools Team via schools@kent-music.com
I am new to the school and do not know all the answers to the survey questions, what should I do?
We recommend that you discuss the survey with a member of senior leadership team or headteacher who will be able to support you to answer the questions. If there are any questions that require clarification, please contact your Area Manager
Will I still get funded if my survey is late?
We cannot guarantee that schools will receive their Funded Opportunity if their survey response is received after the deadline.
I have completed the survey will I be automatically funded?
All schools must complete Kent Musicâs Funded Opportunities Application form which informs us of what you would like funding for. This is in addition to completing the survey to secure their funding.
