Expert Insights: A Masterclass with Nancy Litten at Medway Towns Music Centre

The first few weeks of 2025 have been buzzing at Medway Towns Music Centre, with over 200 musicians filling the centre every Saturday. Among the highlights was a special one-off workshop with renowned pianist and examiner Nancy Litten, made possible by the generous support of The Friends of MTMC.

On Saturday 18th January, Nancy shared her vast experience as an ABRSM examiner, festival adjudicator, and regional lead for EPTA (European Piano Teachers’ Association). Over 50 attendees gathered for an engaging session exploring what examiners look for in performances—and just as importantly, what they don’t! She also offered practical advice on managing performance nerves, making the session invaluable for students and teachers alike.

The interactive Q&A that followed gave attendees the chance to tap into Nancy’s wealth of knowledge, covering everything from exam preparation to creative ways to practise scales. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive:

A fascinating and truly informative session. Knowing what examiners are looking for and how to control nerves was really helpful to hear.

A real insight into how to practice scales in a different and more interesting way.

So pleased we were able to attend. Made to feel very welcome and amazed to see so much music was going on whilst we were here.

With more than 20 ensembles running each Saturday, Medway Towns Music Centre offers something for instrumentalists and singers of all levels. Want to get involved? Take a look at our Music Centres to find out more.
