Day & Night Festival 2020

Welcome to Day & Night Festival, a brand-new virtual music festival from Kent Music for summer 2020!

Just because we can’t get together in person doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy making, playing and learning fantastic music this summer.

So, we’re taking things online with a jam-packed fortnight of free, engaging, educational and, of course, entertaining content for learners young and old, featuring performances, interviews, masterclasses, instrumental and vocal tutorials and more, running from July 25th – August 8th 2020.

Find the full lineup for the two week festival below!

We’ll be releasing new content every day of the festival here on our website, and on Kent Music’s Facebook and Twitter pages. You can also keep up to date with our monthly newsletter.

The masterclasses are all free, ticketed events which will be held on Zoom. More details and links to claim your tickets can be found below!

Masterclasses

We’re pleased to present six free masterclasses for the Day & Night Festival, presented by some of our very own Kent Music tutors.

Whether you’re an aspiring DJ, a songwriter, singer or instrumentalist, you’re bound to find something fantastic to help you on your musical journey!

All masterclasses are free, but spaces are limited so we encourage you to book your space as soon as possible. All masterclasses are for under-18s; a parent or carer will need to sign you up. If you are 18, then you can sign up yourself.

27th July – 16:00 – Blues and Jazz Improv

Are you interested in jazz or blues and want to improve your improvisation skills? Then join our Jazz Improvisation masterclass where, through a series of examples, interactive games – including call and response – motivic development and some scale theory (don’t worry, only a little!), attendees can gain a better understanding of the skills required to improvise in jazz or blues.

30th July  12:00 – Intermediate DJ-ing

Are you an intermediate DJ looking to improve your mixing skills? Join Seb as he takes you through using Traktor, to create your own 5-10 minute mini-mix using 10 of your own tracks, introducing the Camelot Wheel mixing system to teach how to put tracks together that work harmonically and sound professional. You will also have the opportunity to explore different DJ styles and techniques. There will also then be the opportunity for a 20 minute 1:1 with Seb to complete your track and run through a live mix with him.

1st August – Singing Saturday!

11:30 – Stagecraft and Presentation for Singers

If you love singing, musical theatre or opera, acting and enjoy performing your favourites from the West End and Broadway operatic repertoire, then this is the masterclass for you! This session will take an in-depth look at the performance and stagecraft techniques required to portray a character convincingly and convey their emotions through a given piece.

You will need to be confident in singing in front of an audience and be ready to perform a song you know extremely well in front of Sophie, and your fellow students. Additionally, you will need to provide a copy of the score and lyrics to Sophie prior to the masterclass no later than Wednesday 29th July.

So if you fancy yourself as the next Elphaba or Jean Valjean, then sign up now as there are only four places available!

15:00 – Harmony Singing

A fun choir session conducted from the comfort of home! This masterclass will feature vocal workouts to open proceedings and get everyone comfortable, before Kate takes the group through three separate songs in different genres to analyse and deconstruct the harmonies. At the end of the session, attendees will enliven themselves through singing, whilst enhancing their understanding and confidence in building vocal harmonies.

Attendees will have the audio tracks sent in advance, so they can see what they will be looking at, but there is no need to practice beforehand – just turn up and sing your heart out!

3rd August  –  12:00 – Bass Masterclass with Del Chai

Are you a bass player who would like to improve your overall playing by looking at a few techniques from across three different genres? Then join Del as he covers a riff from a well-known song in each style and breaks down the techniques required to perform them. Whether you are into rock, funk or jazz, there will be something for every player to add to their musical arsenal.

There are six tickets available and these are on a first come, first serve basis so book quick!

6th August  – 12:00 – Brass and Woodwind for Songwriters

This masterclass will demonstrate how, with considered application of brass or woodwind instruments into songwriting, songs can be taken to the next level!

After exploring the different ways horns can be used, attendees will be introduced to the different structural elements of songs, as well as processes for developing horn arrangements in different songs (with examples from artists such as Eric Clapton, Spice Girls and Beyonce!)

Instruments aren’t required for this masterclass, but advanced players who are confident with singing will be welcomed as singing ideas out loud for composition is advantageous!

We hope you’re as excited as we are to celebrate great music this summer. So, Kent – let’s get festival-ready!
