The West Kent Youth Orchestra (WKYO) is an advanced classical orchestra for talented musicians eager to experience full orchestral performances and progress their skills in a supportive and fun environment. The orchestra explores traditional orchestral repertoire, including popular film scores and seasonal favourites. Members have the opportunity to perform three times a year for friends and family.
Every week, young musicians from schools across West Kent come together to forge new musical connections and make friends in our diverse and friendly group.

WKYO is currently accepting applications from young musicians on all orchestral instruments, with a particular interest in viola, bassoon, trombone, tuba, oboe, and percussion players.
Meet your tutor
The West Kent Youth Orchestra is led by Benedict Collins-Rice. Benedict is an inspiring conductor and musician from Oxfordshire, who has gained two conducting scholarships from Cambridge University. Today he conducts the West Kent Youth Orchestra alongside numerous choirs, UK-wide, and has also worked across Europe and the US, with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Royal Albert Hall to name a few.

Who is the group for?
The West Kent Youth Orchestra (WKYO) is an advanced classical orchestra for grades 5+.
Are instruments provided?
Students will need to bring their own instruments with the exception of drums and piano/keyboard which can be provided on request.
How much does it cost to join?
We aim to make Music Centre membership as affordable and accessible as possible for everyone who wants to join the music community.
Once you’re a member you will have access to all groups at our Music Centres. You can join as many as you wish, no matter which centre you initially signed up at and make even more music!
Lessons are an additional charge. However, if you have lessons with us you will receive a 10% discount on your Music Centre membership.

How do I join?
It’s simple! Just click the ‘join this group’ button on this page. Complete the form and add the course to your basket. Then go to your basket to finish your application by logging into your Kent Music online customer account.
If you don’t have an account, no worries – you can still apply by clicking the ‘Apply Here’ button. You’ll be guided through a few easy steps to create an account and complete your application.
Once your application is done, you’ll receive further information about your lessons or ensemble.

What if I don’t have my own instrument?
We offer an instrument hire service at affordable rates. You’ll get a discount on your instrument hire if you have lessons with us! This allows students to access high-quality instruments without the need for a significant upfront investment.
