Welcome to the Kent Youth Wind Orchestra (KYWO)!
Formed in 1976, the Kent Youth Wind Orchestra provides talented wind, brass, and percussion players the opportunity to extend their performance skills at a county level. KYWO has provided a concert platform for thousands of players over the years and has performed at numerous major concert venues in the UK and abroad.
The ensemble averages 50 players aged 11 to 19 from across Kent. They meet for three courses each academic year, coached by professional musicians. These courses culminate in performances at highly respected venues across the county.
We’re always excited to welcome new members! If you’re interested in joining, please register using the button below. Auditions take place at set times throughout the year, and you may also be invited to join an upcoming course as part of your audition.

What kind of repertoire does the Kent Youth Wind Orchestra (KYWO) perform?
KYWO holds one of the largest wind ensemble libraries in the South of England featuring a wide range of composers and styles. Our repertoire includes music for the modern wind band and a vast array of pieces specifically written for the group.
What instruments are featured in the KYWO repertoire?
The modern wind band includes whole families of wind instruments and some lesser-known percussion instruments such as the marimba, vibraphone, and xylophone, which composers use to add variety and colour to the repertoire.
How is the KYWO repertoire selected?
Our repertoire is selected to be both educationally beneficial and challenging for the orchestra members. It includes works by composers like Philip Sparke, Guy Woolfenden, Klaus Badelt, and John Barry, among others.
What is the required standard for joining KYWO?
Members of the Kent Youth Wind Orchestra should be of Grade 6 standard or equivalent and above.
What qualities are you looking for in KYWO auditions?
During the audition process, we look for versatility and responsiveness to musical suggestion rather than just good soloists.
Who will assess my KYWO audition?
Your audition will be evaluated by professional musicians and conductors who will provide constructive feedback on your performance.
