Using the MMC
The MMC has been created to complement the National Plan for Music Education and is an additional document to the national curriculum documents for keystages 1 – 3.
The document sets out guidance and expectations for musical learning for keystages 1 – 3. The document is split into year groups and provides guidance around the following areas:
- Singing
- Listening
- Composing
- Performing / Instrumental performance
How can the MMC help me?
The MMC provides guidance for music leads to consider how they sequence musical learning and ensure the curriculum in your school covers the fundamental skills that all students should have access to throughout their education.
There are wider listening lists and suggested repertoire for singing to ensure your students are exposed to a range of genres and diverse styles and composers.
The guidance also provides information on expectations of learning musical notation, technology and the role whole class instrumental teaching plays as part of a rounded offer in schools.
What do I do next?
It is essential that music leads know about the MMC and have read through the relevant parts of the MMC for your school. You should consider what content from the document is suitable for the learners in your setting and what you would like them to have achieved by the end of their time with you.

I am a music lead in a special school, do I need to know about the MMC?
Yes. The MMC has guidance on music making in special educational needs settings and recognises that music is for everyone.
